The History of Botox Injections

To help with this, we need to step back a few decades to when this substance was first researched and used. It was first studied back in the early 1960's and derived from the now famous poison Botulinum toxin; it was used to treat patients with neurological problems.
It wasn't until around 1989 that the Federal Drug Administration agreed to allow its use in medical procedures to help people with disorders of the eye; patients suffering with uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes were given this and sometimes those who suffered with wrinkles as well.
More research was carried out into other medical uses and in 2000 it was allowed to be used on patients that had a cervical dystonia condition; this eases the pain from serious contractions in the shoulders and neck, but it was also given the ok to be used on another more unusual eye condition. The strange discovery they made quite by accident was that botox helps to reduce the visible lines between the eyebrows; this discovery won over the FDA who agreed that it could be used in cosmetic procedures from 2002.
When Botox is injected into the muscles of the forehead, it blocks nerve impulses which results in the weakening of the muscles that cause frowning; in time frown lines gradually soften and subside if sufficient treatments are given. Continued treatments mean in many cases the lines disappear and now the same treatment is used on other areas of the face like the crows' feet, laughter lines and other facial wrinkles. To allay any fears about injection toxin into our bodies these injections only contain a diluted and purified version of the poison; this same botulism can make us very ill but when use in cosmetic surgery it is a purified form the Botulinum toxin.
The problem is that when we laugh, cry or frown for example, lines and wrinkles appear caused by the muscles that have helped create the expression; these injections can help eliminate those lines. When we are young and our skin is more elastic, these lines do not show but as we age the constant use of facial muscles leaves us with lines; many "skin age reduction cream" manufacturers have tried to produce creams that reduce facial line but this is the only treatment that works, currently. Muscles in the area of the botox injection become paralyzed temporarily so they cannot move fully; that's why people who have had these treatments can look like mannequins.
Because frown line, wrinkles and facial creases have all but disappeared, it provides the user with a look of someone much younger. However, this cosmetic treatment is still expensive; with injections in the low to very high hundreds of dollars each, it looks to remain expensive for some time to come. There is always some concern about new treatments and botox is no exception with many people worried about the long term effects of injections, but even so this has not stopped its popularity.
